The SR18 is a handsome, robust, and well-designed unit with a blue, charcoal gray, and black color scheme. (The sole splash of red is reserved for the record button.) It can be powered with either six AA’s or the included AC power supply. In addition to traditional and modern drum sounds—from trap kits to hand percussion to electronic and sampled sounds—the SR18 can incorporate effects, such as reverb, EQ, and compression.
The front panel has 12 instrument pads, with the kicks, snares, and hi-hats along the bottom, and the toms and cymbals on top. Naturally, all pads are assignable, and double as the 12 notes of the chromatic scale for when you’re programming basslines. On the upper region of the front panel are keypad-style buttons, transport functions, menu navigators, a large tap tempo button, and a gigantic jog/shuttle wheel. There’s a generous complement of dedicated buttons here, so you never have to scroll through a bunch of menu pages to get to an editable parameter. The display is backlit and easily readable, with the parameters well-placed and not at all cramped.
The back panel of the SR18 is impressive too, with a master volume knob, a power switch, MIDI I/O/Thru jacks, plus seven ¼" jacks for various audio and control functions (see Fig. 2). For audio, there’s the Main Right and Main Left outputs, a headphone output, and a ¼" TRS Aux L/R output. The Aux jack is used to send individual instruments out for separate processing—such as a different reverb and EQ for the snare, and a flanger on the cymbals. This is great in theory, but when I routed the jack’s left and right outs to separate channels in my mixer, I noticed bleed between the aux and the mains. In most cases it wouldn’t be a problem, but it’s not ideal when you’re looking for total isolation. The work-around would just be to record the parts on separate passes, invoking the instrument’s mute/solo function (a really cool feature in its own right!) that the SR18 provides.
For convenience’s sake, the Instrument input will accept a guitar or keyboard and mix this signal with the drum sounds, making it handy for, say, headphone-equipped practicing. Hooking two footswitches up to the SR18 gives you control over start and stop as well as for inputting a count-off tempo, invoking fills and choosing between the A and B variations of a pattern. All of the control aspects of the back panel footswitches (e.g., tap tempo) are duplicated with front panel buttons. I included an image from the manual (Fig. 3)m because I thought it nicely illustrated the hookup options.
